WHAT'S UP WITH LANDINGS?

You should have received an email from Cirrus in the last several days.  And if you're a regular on the COPA forums you undoubtedly have seen all the discussion and angst about landing accidents. Is something new going on? Is it unique to Cirrus?  Not really.  Turns out that landing accidents have ALWAYS been the #1 GA accident. The yearly Nall Report attests to this fact.

BUT, the data as presented and often discussed focuses on fatal accidents. (Note how your eye is drawn to the blue bars and is fooled into thinking landings are no big deal.  They are #1 of all accidents!) Fortunately, landing accidents are more often not fatal.  But they can be and they recently have been.  CAPS and all the fantastic avionics we have won't make up for poor basic skills.

Those of us who regularly fly and teach in Cirrus, and who also teach regularly at CPPPs, have gotten together to discuss these accidents (why, what happened?), what we are seeing in our instruction with regard to landing habits, and how to provide quality focused instruction on landings.  Along with the Cirrus flight operations department letter, we are offering landing clinics. JUST THE BASICS.  A chance for you to get a check on your skills and make significant improvements (sometimes just simple corrections) in your landing skills.

IF ANY OF THE FOLLOWING APPLY TO YOU, SERIOUSLY CONSIDER THIS LANDING TUNEUP:

ARE YOU LANDING HARD? FLOATING? BOUNCING?

NOT CONFIDENT IN CROSSWINDS? >10 KNOTS? >20 KNOTS?

CHOOSING ONLY LONG RUNWAYS? NOT CONFIDENT IN 2000 OR 3000 FT?

YOU'VE ALREADY SCARED YOURSELF ON LANDING OR HAD A MINOR LANDING INCIDENT?

CHASING AIRSPEED WITH THROTTLE SETTINGS? (YOU'RE WORKING TOO HARD)

NOT FAMILIAR WITH THE CIRRUS FLIGHT OPERATIONS MANUAL?  DON'T FOLLOW IT? CIRRUSFOMLANDINGSEXCERPT.jpg
